Det finns sanningar man inte kan undvika.

Kaisaniemen puisto, Helsinki
It’s hot. The heat hell has finally subsided but it’s still hot. But this has nothing to do with the weather.
21 000 people is quite an audience, especially when it’s buzzing from excitement. Everyone seems to feel hotter than they should be.
At precisely 9 PM Muse appear on stage. Now already? Their punctuality is startling. The drama kings could have made the tensed up crowd writhe with excitement by waiting backstage for another 15 minutes. To come on stage so soon seems actually rude – almost like the band wants the gig to be over and done with as soon as possible.
After Exogenesis part 1, which was used an the opening intro, the first notes of their hit Uprising ring out in Kaisaniemi. Fists rise up to pump in the air.
Muse are a humble servant. They offer their loyal fans some loyal playing: Supermassive Black Hole, Map of the Problematique, Hysteria... This is how it works. Muse give what is wanted from them and fists pump in the air. It’s hot. Stifling a yawn is difficult.
It’s numbing. Hits are being played without asking, the atmosphere is excited and even ecstatic, but I can’t understand why.
The gig is completely lacking soul, surprise and originality. Don’t take me wrong. Mure are a super original band with all their drama and theatrics. But when the originality becomes a suffocating routine, it becomes irksomely boring. Everything goes on autopilot.
Let’s have a look at Muse’s gig calendar. The band started The Resistance tour October 22nd 2009 from Hartwall arena in Helsinki. The tour is set to end December 19th 2010 in Australia. It seems they can’t avoid things turning into a routine, but it’s still distressing. Nothing that is seen on stage surprises or startles.
Muse should not be so leisurely dull. Saying they’re “quite alright” doesn’t do justice to the band but still it’s the most apt description of the performance. Money should not be the problem either. Millions are enough – or at least should be. In my mind I saw fireworks, sparks and strobe lights that would be dangerous for epileptics. In reality I got the last one but it’s just a faint copy of my dream.
Red, green and blue are taking turns on the screen and lights now. It’s a pity that the sun is still shining high from the sky when the gig begins. The green lasers are drowned out by the brightness of the Finnish summer. Hits like Resistance, Time Is Running Out and Starlight would be taken onto another level if the lasers reflected against a darkening sky.
When the visuals are deficient, the frontman Matthew Bellamy is not the one to search soulfulness from. He’s strutting in his silver glitter suit, playing heavenly but clinically. “Thank you”s in Finnish which have been learnt backstage don’t impress: anyone can learn to say a couple of words in Finnish. They still seem to work for the fist pumping audience with questionable ease.
I want to find out why a band that has done magnificent records can play so absently and boringly.
The problem is the predictability. But what’s causing it, is it tiredness? No, because the stage show isn’t lacking energy. Muse have admirably succeeded with their career choice. Noone seems to be tired, everyone plays dynamically and without sparing their power.
Were my expectations too high when I thought I’d see a visual spectacle and passionate musicians? Wait a minute, there it is: passion. Or more like the lack of it.
Muse that plays in front of me is good but without passion. Everyone probably understands the paradox.
Actually Muse should take a few steps backwards. Their megalomania shows as lazyness and twisted twinkle in the eyes. That doesn’t suit anyone.
Band has many amazing songs outside their hit singles. I’m not a fortune teller but I bet that if you asked the band members, they would find it refreshing to play for example Sunburn instead of Undisclosed Desires. At least it would be refreshing to hear.
We’re talking about such a big name here that for a ticket that costs almost 60 € you should get some sort of emotion from the stage. Routines are unavoidable but how can you explain the fact that a 60 year-old Mick Jagger still brings something new with every new tour with The Rolling Stones? It’s not magic, it’s determination and professionalism. And money.
Encore was predictable. Plug in Baby and Knights of Cydonia, what else could it be. When the musicians leave the stage, people in front of me wonder “Was this it?”
Muse played exactly one and a half hours, 18 songs. Well, it was a good gig to watch and listen to, a good performance on the surface. I shouldn’t complain.
